Tank 1 (473-TNK054) measured approximately 10.7m diameter x 5m high. Tank 2 was a smaller tank located approximately 5km away on the same site. Both tanks sat on concrete pads that required protection throughout demolition.
Each tank was demolished using a 36T excavator fitted with a hydraulic shear as the primary attachment and a rotating grapple for steel processing. A wheeled loader handled scrap at ground level and loaded out processed steel. A prime mover and float trailer remained on site for the duration to relocate plant between the two tank locations. Arising steel was transported off-site by triple road train for recycling in Port Hedland.
The demolition methodology required a strict exclusion zone of 1.5x tank diameter during all active works. Only two personnel were permitted inside the zone at any time — the excavator operator in cab and a spotter/controller outside the zone on two-way radio. No manual handling of steel occurred at any point. The sequence for each tank followed the same controlled method: remove external fittings, demolish roof structure, remove internal liner, execute controlled inward collapse of walls, section and load out.
Both tanks were successfully demolished, processed and removed from site within the agreed execution window. Concrete pads and surrounding infrastructure were left undamaged. Site was cleared and demobilised on completion.
