The objective was to widen and seal both roads to improve safety, ride quality, drainage and long-term trafficability for vehicles and trucks.
Yarramony Road required full shoulder widening — wet mixing of new pavement material 2.5m either side of the existing seal to achieve a final sealed width of 7.0m (8.0m formation). Works included clearing and trimming of the existing verge, subgrade preparation and proof rolling, import and placement of MRWA Specification 501 compliant pavement material, layered compaction to 98% MDD, trimming to design levels and crossfall, and a two-coat bituminous seal. Chitty Road received a two-coat seal. Total on-site programme was 9 days.
Equipment deployed included excavator, motor grader, smooth drum roller, water cart, bitumen spray unit and aggregate chip spreader trucks. A structured hold-point quality programme was implemented throughout — subgrade, pavement material compliance and compaction were all inspected and signed off before the next stage commenced. No sealing work proceeded without Superintendent approval at the pre-seal hold point.
Sealing operations required careful weather scheduling around surface dryness, temperature and wind conditions. Binder application rates and aggregate spread were verified at each coat. On completion, a full QA dossier including compaction test results, material compliance certificates and as-constructed records was submitted to the Shire.
Both roads were delivered on programme and to WALGA and Main Roads WA specification.
